Acronym Glossary

Below is a list of helpful campus acronyms and terms and their meanings. Keep in mind: you’ll be hearing these a lot next year!

UGBC - Undergraduate Government of Boston College
The primary governing organization for all Boston College undergraduate students.

MLP - Mentoring Leadership Program - Learn More!
MLP is a group of approximately 50 freshman who are paired with mentors who show them the inner workings of UGBC.

LTS - Learning To Serve - Learn More!
LTS is a service and mentoring program where freshmen spend 4-5 hours a week volunteering in the Boston community.

AHANA
AHANA is a term that refers to those of African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native-American descent. The term was coined at BC in 1979 by two students who wanted to use a more positive term than “minority,” which is cited as “less than.” Use of the term AHANA celebrates social cultural differences.

ALC - AHANA Leadership Council - Learn More!
The AHANA Leadership Council is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all AHANA students at Boston College.

ALA - AHANA Leadership Academy - Learn More!
The AHANA Leadership Council’s program for freshmen, similar in structure to MLP.

GLC - GLBT Leadership Council - Learn More!
The GLBT Leadership Council advocates for the rights of GLBT students on campus. It is a semi-autonomous branch of UGBC.

MLP/ALA Mentor
A mentor is the upperclassman who a member of MLP or ALA (the mentee) is paired with.

MLP/ALA Mentee
A mentee is a member of MLP or ALA, paired with an upperclassman mentor.

SPO - Student Programs Office - Learn More!
SPO is the organization within Boston College that oversees the operation of all clubs and activities on campus.
